VIVA Workshops


The Valley Institute of Visual Art, located at 13261 Moorpark St., offers a variety of workshops for children and adults. Skirball Cultural Center/Learning for Life

Experience art, culture and literature through educational programs at the Skirball Center. Upcoming classes include: Jewelry design; Introduction to Precious Metal Clay; Autobiography, Memoir or Fiction; Introduction to fused glass. Valley Plaza Recreation Center

Located at 12240 Archwood St., the center is operated by L.A.'s Department of Recreation and Parks. Classes offered include ballet and tap, guitar and piano. Call 765-5885 for information on registration, as well as dates, times and costs.

Fine Art & Calligraphy Workshops


Teacher and owner Linda Wehrli offers drawing, pastel, watercolor, acrylic oil painting, pen-and-ink and calligraphy workshops in her Valley Glen Studio. Ms. Wehrli brings over 20 years of experience and professional training to her classes. Basic to advanced lessons are offered for children as young as 6 years, teens, adults and seniors. Students are encouraged to develop their own unique style and gain exposure for their work through public exhibitions. Linda holds student art shows throughout the year.

Classes are held Monday through Saturday, year-round. There are no enrollment fees. Ideal for home school programs. Ask about special session and sibling discounts. Linda is a member of the Greater Valley Glen Council, local Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Club and professional art teacher's associations. Canoga Park Youth Arts Center

Located at 7222 Remmet Ave., classes are limited to eight students and appeal to ages 6-17. Classes explore architecture in art, Japanese anime, impressionism, 3-dimensional art, and comic book art as well as traditional drawing and painting. For more information call 346-7099 or fax 818-346-7232.

Van Nuys Recreation Center

Summer camp activities often include arts and crafts. Music, dance and plays may also be part of the program, which caters to children ages 5 - 13. Camp runs from the end of June until the end of August from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Center is located at 14301 Vanowen Street. Call 756-8131 for a schedule and registration information.

NoHo Gallery LA

    NoHo Gallery LA’s Principles of Art Youth Art Classes at the historic Lankershim Arts Center will teach your child basic drawing and painting techniques and skill development using a variety of mediums and tools. Instructor Vanessa Martinelli will help your child learn mind/hand coordination (right brain activity); color theory; use of different drawing and painting mediums (charcoal, pencil, water color, tempera, etc.); line, shape, texture and form methods; fun and interactive activities on the history of art and the artists who led these styles. A student art show will be held at the end of each session in the gallery!

    For ages 6-17 (classes divided by age and skill level); 18 hours of professional and FUN instruction Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:30-6PM, at 5108 Lankershim Blvd. The cost of $116 includes all supplies, activities and art show. Community Extension Programs

Both Los Angeles Valley College and Los Angeles Mission College offer community extension classes. These non-credit classes can provide skill development, cultural enrichment and recreational enjoyment. A number of courses culminate in a certificate of completion. They present an excellent way to pursue or enhance an interest in the arts.

Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County
Education Division

The Education Division works in collaboration with teachers and parents to bring quality arts programming to schools. Professional artists offer workshops in music, dance, theatre, and visual arts. Multidisciplinary workshops are also available to students, teachers and parents. Workshop fees vary depending on the program. Most workshops are 45 - 60 minutes in length and are appropriate for all age levels.

Studio Courses at Getty Center

Held at the Museum Studios, these adult fine art classes are usually limited to 20-25 participants. A course fee is required and reservations are requested. Call 310-440-7300.

Artful Weekends at the Getty

Saturdays and Sundays, join your children in these drop-in workshops designed to exercise the imagination. Kids can create their own masterpieces from 11am-3pm at the Family Room Patio (or location tba in cooler weather). Offered in English and Spanish. California Artists for Humanity

Founded by artist Carlos Vera, this program focuses on youth and the arts. Teenagers from the San Fernando Valley have been coming to the 5.000 square foot studio at 5303 Lankershim Blvd. to paint, sketch, and dance. With free access to art supplies and tutoring available, the kids (many from North Hollywood High) are channeling their creativity and learning about the marketing of their art at the same time.

TeenAge Drama Workshop

Participants in Cal State Northridge's workshop spend six weeks learning about acting and performing on stage. The summer plays for youth are held in Nordhoff Hall at 18111 Nordhoff St. Call 677-2488 for information.
